David A. Field was a gymnast and university teacher. He was born on October 14, 1917. He attended the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign for undergraduate, graduating in 1940; he later earned a PhD in physical education. He served as a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He taught physical education at the University of Maryland from 1945 until 1956, where he founded the University of Maryland Gymkana troupe in 1946. He later taught at the University of Bridgeport and Ball State University. He died on April 4, 1998.
