The son of Dutch immigrants, Henry Bruinsma was born in New Jersey in 1916. He received in bachelors, master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Michigan. He began his tenure as Dean of the College of Fine Arts in 1964, coming to ASU from the School of Music, Ohio State University, though he had served as chairperson of the Music Department, ASU, in 1955. Resigning in 1975, he became Dean at California State University, San Jose. He now lives in retirement in Sun City West.
