Clifford O.T. Wieden was the principal of the Aroostook State Normal School (later the Aroostook State Teacher's College and now the University of Maine at Presque Isle) and became its president in 1953. In the summer of 1947 he taught a course at Farmington State Teachers College (now the University of Maine at Farmington) entitled "Sociography: A Maine State Travel Course." The course involved travel, observation and interviews as well as lectures, discussion and development of teaching units. The sixteen class members combined study with recreation, traveling to various parts of the state of Maine to study its physical, economic, sociological and historic features. In addition to day trips to various communities, the class spent several days in both Washington and Aroostook Counties.
