The Clay County area chapter of the American Red Cross was organized in 1917, with its headquarters in the city of Moorhead. The chapter has played a part in providing assistance to individuals, servicemen, and families during both world wars, and during floods and other natural disasters. In 1957, the chapter merged with the Cass County (North Dakota) chapter to form the Minn-Kota chapter, headquartered in Fargo.
