Artemisia Bowden, chief administrator of St. Philip's College for fifty-two years; b. 1 Jan. 1883 in Albany, Ga.; d. Aug. 1969 in Texas; parents were Milas and Mary Molette Bowden; eldest of seven siblings; graduated from St. Augustine's College in 1900; taught at St. Joseph's Parochial School, Fayetteville, N.C.; taught at High Point Normal and Industrial School, High Point, N.C.; came to San Antonio in 1902 to head the four year old St. Philip's School as its third principal; guided the development of St. Philip's from a parochial school to a two-year college; retired in 1954.
