Francis L. Broderick was born September 13, 1922 in New York, N.Y., the son of Joseph Aloysius (a banker) and Mary (Lyons) Broderick. On June 12, 1950 he married Barbara Baldridge,and together they had four children. In 1943 he graduated from Princeton University. He then served in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1943-1945. After World War II, he went on to earn both a Master of Arts degree (1947) and a Ph. D. (1955) from Harvard University in Politics. He was a Catholic historian interested in the social and economic reforms of the New Deal. He wrote several books including Right Reverend New Dealer: John A. Ryan in 1963. The notes for this book are included in this particular collection. He went on to become Chancellor of the University of Massachusetts, Boston from 1968-1972, and was awarded the National Catholic Book Award in 1964 for The Life of James Cardinal Gibbons.
