M. Rutledge Rivers (1868-1940), lawyer of Charleston, S.C., who served as attorney for various corporations and corporate counsel for the City of Charleston, 1918-1920. Rivers was also active in civic affairs, chairing the Port Utilities Commission in 1923 and serving on the South Carolina Board of Education and on the boards of trustees of both the College of Charleston and the Medical College of South Carolina.

Moultrie Rutledge Rivers was born in Mount Pleasant, S.C., on 13 May 1868, the son of Constant Henry and Mary Elizabeth Minott Rivers. He received an A.B. degree from the College of Charleston in 1890 and was admitted to the South Carolina bar in the same year. He married Eliza Ingraham Buist on 2 February 1893. The couple had five children: Mary Edwards (Mrs. Charles Webb), Moultrie Rutledge, George Lamb Buist, John Minott, and Arthur Lee.

After working with several other law firms, Rivers became a member of the Charleston firm of Hagood, Rivers & Young in 1913 and served as corporate counsel for the City of Charleston from 1918 to 1920. He was also a director of the South Carolina Power Company, the Atlantic National Bank of Charleston, and the Citizens and Southern Bank of South Carolina. He was a member of the Charleston Port Utilities Commission, serving as chair in 1923, and of the boards of trustees of the College of Charleston and the Medical College of South Carolina. He served as chair of the Board of Public School Commissioners and was a member of the South Carolina Board of Education.

Rivers was active in Democratic Party politics, serving as chair of the Democratic Executive Committee of the City of Charleston. He was an Episcopalian and a Mason, and co-authored a history of the St. Andrew's Society of Charleston, S.C., published in 1929.
