Lawson Gross resided in Clark County, Indiana. He married Mariah Lewis on 22 July 1860. He was drafted into the Indiana 37th Infantry on 20 September 1864. No date or method of discharge was recorded. The Indiana 37th Infantry was mustered in on 18 September 1861. The regiment saw fighting in Tennessee late in 1862. In 1864 it moved to Georgia, and engaged the Confederate Army many times through the Savannah campaign. It was mustered out in July 1865.
