Kowalski, born Karen E. Mundell in San Francisco, Cal., and raised in Frankfort, Ind., is a nursing administrator and educator, women's health advocate, and author. After graduating from Indiana University in 1965 with a nursing degree, she entered the Army Nurse Corps and served during 1966-1967 at the Biên Hòa Air Base, Vietnam. She also served in Landstuhl, Germany, where she met and married Walter A. Kowalski. She returned to the U.S. in 1969, settling near Denver, Co.
