Eileen Joyce, pianist, was born at Zeehan, Tas., on 21 November 1912. Her father, a miner, returned to Western Australia, where country teachers arranged tuition for her at the Loreto College, Perth. Percy Grainger considered her "the most transcendentally gifted child" he had ever heard; another visitor, Wilhelm Beckhaus, recommended the Leipzig Conservatorium. A public subscription enabled her to go. She went on to become a world famous performer.
