Institution of electrical engineers
Variant namesIncorporated in 1883, and in 1921 was granted a Royal Charter which recognized it as the representative body of electrical engineers in the United Kingdom. The main purposes of the Institution are: to act as a learned society to promote the dissemination of knowledge about electrical science and engineering; to act as a qualifying body conferring membership on those whose qualifications fulfill the requirement of the Bylaws of the Institution; and to serve as a regulating body for the profession of electrical engineering, instituting, and requiring members to observe a code of conduct as set out in the Bylaws. The three main purposes lead, in turn, to many contributory activities including setting standards of electrical engineering education and giving advice and assistance to those entering the profession. Another important duty is the preparation and issue of technical regulations for electrical equipment.

The Institution of Electrical Engineers was founded in 1871 in Great Britain with a head office established at Savoy Place, Victoria Embankment in London. Representation of the parent body began with the establishment of Local Advisory Committees in the states and at the executive level, the Institution of Electical Engineers, London, Queensland Secretariat held its first gathering in July 1929, at which the formal notice convening the meeting was read. Early gatherings of members were held at rooms of the Institution of Engineers Australia, Empire Chambers, Queen & Wharf Streets, Brisbane; or later at the office of John Stephens Just in Queen Street, Brisbane; or at the Engineering Faculty of the newly established University of Queensland.
The Queensland Secretariat later established its own business premises at 14 Dickson Terrace, Hamilton. By the early 1980's meetings were being held at the offices of S.E.Q.E.B. at Anne Street in the City and the name had changed to 'Queensland Overseas Committee.' Minutes of the AGM, 1988, noted: "The Annual General Meeting of the renamed Queensland Overseas Centre was held on 15th December 1988 at the Coronation Motel, Brisbane, with 37 members in attendance." The Annual Report for the Calendar Year 1990 dated 30 January 1991 documents the change of name of the issuing body to 'The Institution of Electrical Engineers - Queensland Centre.' The final change of corporate name in the collection was noted in minutes of the committee meeting of 20 February 1997 to 'The Institution of Electrical Engineers - IEE Queensland.'
A prominent foundingMr. Just, M.I.E.E., became Honourary Secretary and Treasurer in 1935, and was appointed Chairman and Secretary of the Local Committee in February 1937, a title which later changed to Overseas Representative for Queensland. Mr. Just held this position with distinction until his sudden death in September, 1962.
A prominent founding member of the Institute in Queensland was John Stephens Just. He joined the City Electric Light Co. Ltd., Brisbane in 1915 as Chief Assistant Engineer and served as Engineer - Manager of the Company from 1916 to 1928. When Mr. Just came to Brisbane only the centre of the city was electrified, but under his direction power was extended through the metropolitan area and as far afield as Redcliffe and Ipswich. He established the power-station at Bulimba. He was a foundation member of the Institution of Engineers, Australia and served on the Council of the Institution from 1919 to 1937. He was twice Chairman of the Brisbane Division of the Institution. He served on the Local Committee of the Institution of Electrical Engineers from its inception in 1930. He became Hon. Secretary and Treasurer in 1935, a title which was later changed to Overseas Representative for Queensland. He served in this position with distinction until his sudden death on 5th September, 1962 at the age of 81.
