The Director is responsible for the direction of all of the Smithsonian American Art Museum's programs and operations and represents its interests within the Smithsonian community and in the wider world of art--other galleries in the United States and abroad, art scholars, art patrons, and the interested public.
William Henry Holmes was the first Director, 1907-1932, and was succeeded by Ruel P. Tolman, Acting Director, 1932-1945, and Director, 1946-1948. Tolman was followed by Thomas M. Beggs, 1948-1964; David W. Scott, 1965-1969; Robert Tyler Davis (Interim), 1969; Joshua Charles Taylor, 1970-1981; Harry Lowe (Acting), 1981-1982; Charles C. Eldredge, 1982-1988; and Elizabeth Broun, 1989- .
