Librarian, writer, and folklorist. Born in Cidra Puerto Rico in 1899, Belpré's career began in 1921 in the New York Public Library system. While working in the children's division she developed her gift for storytelling and in 1932 published her first book, (Pérez and Martina: A Portorican Folk Tale). She went on to become a well published writer, editor and translator of children's literature. Within NYPL she was an active advocate for the needs of the Spanish-speaking community. She died in New York in 1982.
