Born in Montclair, New Jersey on May 7, 1866, the son of Alfred and Jane Brown Tucker Taylor, he attended public school and entered Harvard College in 1884. He made philosophy his major subject, received honorable mention as a student, and wrote a dissertation for his commencement in 1888. He entered the Harvard Medical School the next year and obtained the Boylston Medical Society prize in February, 1891, with an essay entitled "The Mental Element in the Treatment of Disease," published the same year. He graduated with an M.D. from Harvard later that same year.

Between 1896 and 1904, Taylor was an Instructor in Neuropathology at Harvard Medical School. From 1898 to 1918, he also served as Instructor in Neurology at the University's Dental School, congruantly serving as an Instructor in Neurology at the Medical School between 1906 and 1912. He became Assistant Professor of Neurology in 1912, Professor of Neurology in 1917, and the James Jackson Putnam Professor of Neurology in 1920. He held this position until 1926.

By 1897, Taylor was also connected to Massachusetts General Hospital as an Assistant in Neurology and to Long Island Hospital, Boston Harbor, as a Visiting Neurologist. During his career, he published many works in the field of Neuropatholgy, including the book Case histories in neurology: a selection of histories setting forth the diagnosis, treatment, and post-mortem findings in nervous disease in 1911.

He died on August 17, 1932 at the age of either 65 or 66 and was buried at the Brookfield Cemetary in Broofield, Massachusetts.
