The Grasselli Chemicals Department was created on Nov. 1, 1936 from the formerly independent Grasselli Chemicals Company, which had been a manufacturer of acids and heavy chemicals since 1839. The department was responsible for the manufacture of ammonia, inorganic heavy chemicals, zinc smelting and plating products, tanning chemicals, insecticides, and wood preservatives. It was renamed the Industrial and Biochemicals Department on June 1, 1959.
