Texas Society of Professional Engineers Auxiliary

Hide Profile

The Auxiliary of the Travis Chapter of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers (TSPE) was formed on February 1, 1950 to support the activities of the Travis chapter of the TSPE. Its membership was composed largely of the wives and daughters of TSPE members. As stated in an early version of the constitution and bylaws, the goals of the Auxiliary were to "promote interest in the professional engineer and his place in society" and "to promote the best interest of the professional engineer, his family and the Travis Chapter". The organization continues to promote the engineering profession by holding social functions such as banquets and by sponsoring educational programs such as MATHCOUNTS, a nationwide program that promotes math excellence for 6th, 7th and 8th grade students. It also holds various fundraising events including fashion shows in support of the Leah Moncure Memorial Scholarship, an award established by the Auxiliary in 1965 for female engineering students at the University of Texas at Austin Cockrell School of Engineering. Miss Moncure was the first woman to be registered as an engineer in the state of Texas and the first female member of the TSPE. She was also an early Auxiliary member.
