John Joseph Griffin was born on June 24, 1859 in Corning, NY. He was ordained on May 1, 1885 at Ottowa Seminary, and later obtained his Ph. D. from Johns Hopkins University in 1895. That same year he was appointed Professor of Chemistry at Catholic University. He was the first Chemistry professor the University employed. During his time at Catholic University, he served as Dean of the Philosophy faculty department from 1903-1905, and later as Dean of the Science faculty department from 1908-1911. Rev. Dr. Griffin stayed as a Professor of Chemistry at Catholic University until his death on November 15, 1921 at Notre Dame Convent in Baltimore.
