Dykstra graduated from Hope College in 1909. He attended both Princeton Theological Seminary and New Brunswick Theological Seminary and was licensed and ordained by the Reformed Church in America in 1912. Besides his 42 years as a minister, Dykstra was president of the General Synod in 1939 and president of the Hope College Board of Trustees from 1940-1961.
