William Walter Henderson was born 20 November 1916 to parents William and Dora. He attended Bulimba State School then Brisbane State High School. In 1932 William successfully sat an examination recruiting apprentices for the Queensland Government Railways Department. He began his apprenticeship as a moulder in the railway workshops; also at this time undertaking a Diploma of Engineering. He was awarded his diploma in 1939. In 1940 William transferred to the Drawing Office. In 1947 he was awarded a Bachelor of Engineering from the University of Queensland. By his retirement in 1981 he was the Engineer for Design and Construction, Mechanical Branch, Queensland Railways.
