Hyman "Hy" Berman was born on February 20, 1925 in New York. He earned his B.S. in 1948 from City College of New York and his Ph.D. in 1956 from Columbia University. Dr. Berman was a history instructor at City College of New York (1952-1956), Brooklyn College (1956-1960) and assistant professor at Michigan State University (1960-1961) before joining the faculty at the University of Minnesota in 1961 as an associate professor. He was promoted to professor in 1970. Dr. Berman was an expert on U.S. labor history and taught the first courses on this subject at the University, in addition to courses on the Holocaust and Minnesota history. He also served as a special advisor to Governor Rudy Perpich from 1976-1979 and as a political commentator in the Twin Cities area. Hyman Berman retired from the University of Minnesota in 2004 as professor emeritus.
