Elliott, Robert N. (Robert Neal), 1915-2003

Dr. Robert Neal Elliott, Jr., was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1915. He was trained as a professional photographer by M. F. Dunbar. During World War II, he utilized his photography skills as a camera operator for the United States Army Air Force's First Motion Picture Division, based in Hollywood, California. After the war, Elliott earned a bachelor's degree from Appalachian State University and a doctorate degree from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, where he specialized in North Carolina history. He taught at Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, North Carolina, from 1953 to 1956, then at North Carolina State University from 1956 until his retirement in 1981. He is the author of The Raleigh Register, 1799-1863. He maintained an active interest in photography throughout his life and on at least one occasion exhibited his photographs at North Carolina State University. Elliott died in 2003.
