Faculty Women's Club

Hide Profile

The Faculty Women's Club formed during the 1950-1951 academic year at Pueblo Junior College (PJC) and continued its activities for over forty years until the club's dissolution in March of 1994. Membership was open to female faculty and staff, as well as wives of male faculty and staff Club during its forty-four year existence. In that time, the club transcended several institutional name changes from PJC, to Southern Colorado State College (SCSC), and ultimately the University of Southern Colorado (USC). During the mid 1960's when Southern Colorado State College also began instruction on the citys new Belmont campus, the Faculty Women's Club became inclusive of members from both campuses. The club hosted numerous activities including a variety of social gatherings, educational workshops, arts and crafts gatherings, and scholarship fundraising activities for students. The most notable fundraising activity was the club's annual fashion show in which the club's members themselves served as the models for the yearly affair.

The Faculty Women's Club, founded in 1913, was a social organization founded "to promote sociability among its members and further the interests of the University." The women included faculty and wives of faculty members at the University of Idaho. From 1941-1976 meetings were held quarterly. In addition to regular meetings, special interest groups met once or twice a month. As part of its association with the Idaho Federation of Women's Clubs, the Faculty Women's Club sponsored an auxiliary organization for students wives (the Dames Club) as well as several annual public service projects. The club also hosted the annual Senior Reception for graduating seniors and their parents. Until 1965, the women's club served the annual Commencement Tea. The biggest event of the social year was the Spring Fashion Show.

The Faculty Women's Club was founded in 1913 as a social organization to promote sociability among its members and further the interests of the university. Although membership was open to both female faculty members and wives of faculty members at the University of Idaho, the majority of the members in later years were wives and widows of retired faculty. Regular club meetings were held quarterly, but special interest groups met once or twice a month. As part of its association with the Idaho Federation of Women's Clubs, which membership the club resigned in 1988, the Faculty Women's Club sponsored an auxiliary organization for student wives called the Dames Club, as well as assisting at several annual public service projects such as the campus blood drives. The club also hosted the annual Senior Reception for graduating seniors and their parents. Until 1965 they also served the annual Commencement Tea. One of the biggest events of the social year was the Spring Fashion Show. Due to lack of interest among its members, less than half of the 80 members invited to the December 1993 tea came, the club voted at that meeting to disband. Their silver tea service was donated to the U of I president's house and the remaining china and silverware was auctioned, with the proceeds going to an endowment fund providing scholarships for Idaho women attending the University.
