Nancy Carlson was born October 10, 1953, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. After attending the University of Minnesota, Duluth, from 1972-1973, and the Santa Fe Workshop of Contemporary Art in 1975, Carlson received a B.F.A. from Minneapolis College of Art and Design in 1976. In the 1980s, she began illustrating children's books and writing her own picture books. Carlson's draw inspiration from her own childhood experiences, her family and friends. Working in a variety of media, she became well-known for her series featuring the animal characters Harriet, Loudmouth George, and Louanne Pig. Using anthropomorphic animals, Carlson's stories impart easily understood moral messages such as the importance of sharing and how to be brave in the face of bullying or stage fright. Her characters express human emotions, experiences, and dilemmas to which small children can readily relate.
