Valentine, Mann S., 1824-1892
Variant namesMann S. Valentine, Jr., of Richmond, Virginia, gained his fortune from Valentines Meat Juice, a health tonic made from beef. He was the son of Elizabeth Mosby and Mann S. Valentine, a merchant. The younger Mann was interested in history and collected artifacts of all sorts. When he died in 1892, he left his home, his collections, and the Wickham House to the city of Richmond for a museum, which opened in 1898. Manns brother Edward, a sculptor as well as a collector, served as president of the museum and left his personal collections to it when he died in 1930. The Valentine Museum became the Valentine Richmond History Center in 2000. The museum is located at 1015 East Clay Street, in downtown Richmond.
