The Penn State Office of the Provost was named such in 1950; it functioned under a variety of other names, returning to the Office of Provost from 1971 to 1984. President Bryce Jordan reorganized the administrative offices in 1984, creating the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost. The Provost is responsible for the academic administration of the University, and the overall welfare of the faculty and students. The Executive Vice President aids the President in most University operations, and serves as chief executive officer in the President's absence.
