The daughter of Texas politician and co-author of the 18th Amendment Morris Sheppard (1875-1941), Lucile Sheppard Keyes (b. 1920) graduated from Wellesley College in 1940. A year later, she married Arthur Hawkins Keyes, with whom she had three children. In 1948, Keyes earned her PhD from Radcliffe College, where she was also a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
