Heger, Joseph, 1835-1897
Variant namesArtist and soldier; born in Germany in 1835, Joseph Heger came to the U.S. with his parents. He served as a private in Company K of the First Regiment of Mounted Riflemen along with John Van Deusen Du Bois. Their campaigns against the Indians included the Gila-Apache campaign of 1857, the Utah war of 1858, and the Navajo campaign of 1859.
