The Genetics Program was established in 1977 within the College of Science at Oregon State University as an interdisciplinary graduate program offering Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in genetics. The Genetics Program faculty were primarily affiliated with departments in the Colleges of Science, Agriculture, and Forestry. As of 2006, fifty Oregon State faculty served in the Genetics Program in addition to teaching and service duties in their home departments. The primary focus of the program was the recruitment and training of graduate students interested in genetic approaches to basic and applied research in the life sciences. Until the early 2000s, funding for the Genetics Program was provided by the Colleges of Agriculture, Science, Forestry, and Pharmacy. However, by 2005 the College of Agricultural Sciences was the sole source of funds for the Program. Several faculty served as Directors of the Genetics Program, including Peter S. Dawson, Warren Kronstad, Dallice I. Mills, and Walt Ream. The Genetics Program was eliminated in 2009.
