Linwood Mandeville Erskine Jr. was born on August 28, 1923 in Worcester, Mass. and elisted in the Army on March 30, 1943 at Fort Devens, Mass. At the time of enlistment he was unmarried, had completed four years of high school and working in the manufacture of automobiles. Erskine joined the 10th Mountain Division at Camp Hale. Colo. and was assigned to Company L of the 86th Infantry Regiment and also served with Headquarters of the Third Battalion of the 86th. He was later stationed at Camp Swift, Tex. before being sent to Italy. Erskine was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his actions in the Apennine Mountains and Po Valley. He attained the rank of Sergeant.
