Portland, Saco, and Portsmouth Rail Road Company
Variant namesThe Portland, Saco, and Portsmouth Rail Road Company was started in 1842 to build a railroad from Portland to South Berwick, Maine. By connecting there with the Eastern or the Boston and Maine Railroad, it provided Portland with a rail link with Boston and points south. The railroad's construction was financed largely by stockholders from Boston, and managers of the Eastern Rail Road were very involved in its early history. In 1846 the company was leased jointly by the Eastern Rail Road and the Boston and Maine. In 1887 the company was purchased by the Boston and Maine Railroad.
