Fred Bonanno was born in New York City, N.Y. in 1917. His family moved to San Jose, Calif. in 1921. Bonanno graduated from the San Jose State University with a degree in journalism (1942) and was married and working for the San Jose Evening News before he enlisted in the army at San Francisco, Calif. on February 15, 1943. Bonanno joined the 10th Mountain Division and was assigned to Company K of the 87th Infantry Division. He served at Camp Ord, Calif.; Kiska, Alaska; Camp Carson, Colo.; and Camp Swift, Tex. During combat operations in Italy he was awarded a Bronze Star Medal for his actions at Mt. Croce on April 16, 1945 and attained the rank of Sargeant. Bonanno died on July 26, 1999 in San Jose, Calif.
