He also served on the editorial board of the Journal of Experimental Zoology (1946- ), as managing editor of the Journal (1947- ), and as director of the Osborn Zoological Laboratory at Yale University (1947- ). Nicholas was also a contributing member to many professional societies and organizations. He died in September, 1963 in New Haven, Connecticut.
