Philosopher, educator and psychologist George Trumbull Ladd was born in Painesville, Ohio in 1842. Trumbull's years as a lecturer in theology at Andover Theological Seminary and at Harvard University eventually led him to Japan to serve as diplomatic advisor between the United States and Japan under prime Minister Hirofumi Ito.
During this time, Ladd also lectured at Imperial University in Japan while serving as invited lecturer at several other universities throughout Asia from 1892 to 1907.
These lectures became an important foundation for changing Japan's educational methods. As a result Ladd was awarded two honors from the Order of the Rising Sun in Japan.
Ladd died on August 8, 1921 at New Haven, Connecticut.
