Caspar Wüster was born in Hilsbach, near Heidelberg, Germany, on February 3, 1696, and died in Philadelphia on March 21, 1752. The Anglicized form "Wistar" was recorded on his naturalization papers and adopted by his descendants. Wistar arrived in Philadelphia on September 16, 1717, and eventually became a successful merchant and brass-button maker. He founded the first glassworks in America near Salem, N.J., in 1739.
