Confederate Brigadier General William Nelson Pendleton served in the artillery corps and shortly before the battle of First Manassas was made chief of artillery of the Northern Virginia army serving under Gen. Joseph E. Johnston and was then promoted to brigadier general. He then served in the same position under Lee after he took over the army of Northern Virginia. He was a graduate of the United States Military Academy, where he became close friends with Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis, a professor of mathematics at West Point and a minister in the Episcopal Church.
