George Knaphus (1924-2000), a native of Iowa, served during World War II and won the bronze star. He graduated from Iowa State Teachers' College (University of Northern Iowa) in 1949; earned an M.S. (1951) in Plant Pathology from Iowa State College (University); and a Ph. D (1964) in 1964. He farmed and taught high school in the community of McCallsburg, holding various leadership positions, 1951-1962.
Knaphus returned to Iowa State as an Instructor (1962-1965); Assistant Professor (1965-1968); Associate Professor (1968-1972) and Professor (1972-2000) in Botany and Plant Pathology. He was also involved with the Iowa State intramural softball program. Among his many awards: the Governor's Science Medal and Professor of the Year (1995).
