The Monroe letters were written before, during, and after Monroe's presidency (1816-1824), to his friend and business associate, Paul Bentalou, in Baltimore. Lafayette toured the United States in 1824 - 1825, and he notes his immediate plans. Girardin was an educator, and became a professor at the College of William and Mary; he wrote to Maximilian Godefroy from Baltimore, where Godefroy, an architect, had several architectural commissions. Guibert was a general and historian, and Rochambeau commanded the French forces at the Battle of Yorktown.
