Leavitt, Ralph

Ralph "Bud" Leavitt was born in Old Town in 1917. He began writing for the "Bangor Daily Commercial" in 1934. He served during World War II as a civilian employee for the Army Air Corps. In 1946, he joined the "Bangor Daily News" as a general sportswriter. He began his well known column in 1948 that continued until Nov. 30, 1994. In 1953, he began the "Bud Leavitt Show" on television that lasted until 1973. In 1979, Mr. Leavitt's "Woods and Waters" program first aired on PBS. He has appeared on "American Sportsman" and authored the book "Twelve Months in Maine." He ended his career as sports editor with the Bangor Daily News in 1988, but continued his column. He died December 20, 1994.
