Alexander Russell Bolling (b. Aug. 28, 1895, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania-d. June 3, 1964) served as a U.S. Army officer in both World Wars I and II. In 1918 he served with the 3rd Infantry Division, AEF at Aisne-Marne, Champagne-Marne, St. Mihiel, and Argonne engagements. Later, after graduating from Command and General Staff School and the Army War College, he served as assistant chief of staff for intelligence at I Corps Area from 1938 to 1940, then assistant chief of staff for personnel at Army Ground Forces from 1940 to 1943. He became a brigadier general in August 1942; assistant division commander of 8th Infantry Division, then 84th Division from 1943 to 1944); and major general and commanding general of 84th Division in 1945. A highly-decorated officer, he served as commanding general of Third Army from 1952 to 1955. He retired from Army service at the rank of lieutenant general in July 1955.
