Margaret Williamson Menzies Campbell (nee Shirlaw), MBChB Hon FDS FRCSEd (1893-1990), dental surgeon, grew up in Darlington. She studied at St Andrews University, 1912-1918. From 1918-1919 she was a House Surgeon at Doncaster Royal Infirmary and then went into general practice with her aunt Dr Marion Gilchrist, the first woman to graduate from a Scottish university (Glasgow, 1894). Campbell held an appointment at the Redlands Hospital for Women, Glasgow. She married John Menzies Campbell, FDS RCSEd and RCPS Glasgow (d 1974), in 1924, and they set up in practice together in Glasgow. She was made an Honorary Fellow in Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, 1977, and endowed a series of lectures on the history of dentistry in Glasgow, Dundee and Edinburgh. She wrote, A History of the Redlands: Glasgow Women's Private Hospital (1981).
