The extension homemakers movement began in the early twentieth century in order to educate homemakers in rural and agricultural areas to management their households more effectively and economically. By the latter part of the twentieth century, demographics in North Carolina and the United States had changed, and women were less interested the program that home economists had to offer. By the beginning of the twenty first century, most extension homemaker clubs and organizations had closed. The Mecklenburg County Extension Homemakers Association closed in late 2008.
