Frank Dixon McCloy was a professor with expertise in the New Testament at the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and an interim Presbyterian minister at area congregations. He was born on March 18, 1910, to Frank D. McCloy, Sr. and Rosette Cole, in Pittsburgh, Pa. He began his lifelong association with the seminary when he taught New Testament Greek at the Western Theological Seminary while earning his Bachelor in Sacred Theology degree, which he earned in 1939. Prior to graduating from the seminary, he earned a bachelor degree and a masters degree from the University of Pittsburgh, taught elementary Greek and became a musician, scriptwriter and announcer at a radio station in Rockford, Il. In 1940 he entered Harvard University on fellowships from the Board of Christian Education and from Western Theological Seminary. McCloy was ordained in 1942. When he returned to Pittsburgh he was the Boys Club Director at the Sarah Heinz House for a year before becoming instructor of Biblical languages at the Western Theological Seminary. A year later he became the librarian at the seminary in addition to teaching. By 1951, he was the dean. Washington and Jefferson College in Washington, Pa. awarded him an honorary Doctorate in Divinity in 1952. In 1959 the Western Theological Seminary and the Pittsburgh Xenia Theological Seminary merged to become the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary where McCloy became associate professor of Church History. Throughout his teaching career, he served as interim minister at various area congregations, wrote articles for professional publications, and spoke at conferences. He died on December 25, 1967 in New York City.
