Phelan, Jean Ross Howard, 1916-2004.
Aviator and organizing founder in 1955 of the Whirly-Girls International, an international organization of women helicopter pilots. A native of Washington, D.C., Phelan trained with the Women Airforce Service Pilots and served in Capri, Italy, with the American Red Cross during WWII. After the war, she worked for Aerospace Industries Association (AIA) until her retirement. She served as president of the American Women's News Club, 1966-1968.
