Edward McShane Waits was born on April 29, 1871 in Cynthiana, Kentucky. He attended Kentucky Wesleyan College and received a B.A. from the College of the Bible of Transylvania University. He served as a Disciples of Christ Church minister at several churches, among them Magnolia Avenue Christian Church in Fort Worth from 1904 to 1916. He served from 1910 to 1916 as secretary to the Board of Trustees of TCU and as a member of the Advisory Committee to the Board. Under his leadership as president from 1916 to 1941, the university experienced tremendous prosperity, including the reversal of the school's financial position from one of debt to security with its endowment. He authored two books, including A College Man's Religion. Waits died on December 26, 1949.
