Economist and restaurateur, Mary S. Garin-Painter graduated from Swarthmore in 1942 and worked for the Office of Strategic Services, where she pioneered statistical models for analyzing Germany's military capabilities. After the war she worked for the Federal Reserve Board in Washington and at the Federal Reserve Bank in New York; her article published in 1945 used new Commerce Department concepts to calculate the gross national product from 1919-1928. In 1949 she served in Paris under the Marshall Plan and until 1960 was in charge of analyzing French and German economies for the United States mission to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and other regional organizations. In 1968 she married Georges Garin in Paris. The couple moved to Solliès-Toucas in the south of France where they opened another restaurant. Mr. Garin died in 1979; Garin-Painter remained in the area until her death in 1991.
