Author, political science professor, and sixth president of Texas Western College (later the University of Texas at El Paso).

Born in Bowling Green, Kentucky, in 1907, Dr. Joseph Malchus Ray attended the University of Texas from 1929-1937, where he obtained his Bachelor of Arts, Master's, and Ph.D. in government, minoring in both history and economics. He married Jettie Hollingsworth in 1933 and became president of Texas Western College in 1960 after serving as both professor and administrator at various institutions in Texas and the South. Ray stepped down from the presidency in 1968 and died in El Paso, Texas, in 1991 at the age of 83.
