Born in Mizun, Austria, John Gottwald (b. 1905) attended grade and high school there. He completed his veterinary medicine studies at the Academy of Veterinary Medicine in Lwow, Poland, and worked as a veterinarian until 1940 in Nowogrodek, Poland, and then in the Lask-Lodz area. From 1947-1951, he worked in occupied Austria for the French Army as Garrison Veterinarian, and in 1951 came to the United States, where he worked for the USDA as a veterinary medical officer.
