Corry McDonald, a mechanical engineer and wilderness preservationist, was born in Butte, Montana in 1914. He received a BSME from Montana State College in 1939 and studied at Cal Tech and MIT and received his MSME in 1940. He moved to Albuquerque in 1947 and became active in New Mexico wilderness preservation efforts.

McDonald's interest in environmental issues is reflected by active membership in many conservation organizations. They include: Butte & Montana Game Preservation Association (1932-1936); Save the Grand Canyon Committee (chairperson 1960-1965); Albuquerque Game Preservation Association (1950-); Continental Divide Trail Committee (1979-1981); New Mexico Wilderness Study Committee (1966-, chairperson 1967-1975) and the Wilderness Society (1975-), among others.

McDonald's personal notes from his backcountry trips became the basis of his book, Wilderness: A New Mexico Legacy (1985). His book, The Dilemma of Wilderness (1987) explores the complexities of special interests and wilderness usage.
