Rufus King Gilman was a supercargo when this diary was kept. Born in 1804, he was the eighth child of Benjamin C. Gilman (1779-1863), a merchant in Exeter, N.H. Gilman probably attended the Exeter Academy and resided with his brother William, a merchant, in Norwich, Ct.
