The Cleveland Monthly Meeting was established in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1871. The Salem Quarterly Meeting assisted the Cleveland Friends in building a Meeting House. In the Year 1880, J. Walter Malone started to attend the Meetings, and that is where he met Emma Isabel Brown. They were married in 1886. In 1883 the Monthly Meetings were established, meeting every fourth day after two weeks. 1892, Emma B. Malone and J. Walter Malone started a school called the Christian Workers' Training School. The name would change several times as the school grew and changed, becoming the Friends Bible Institute and Training School upon incorporation in 1899, the Cleveland Bible Institute in 1911, the Cleveland Bible College in 1937, Malone College in 1956 and now Malone University. In addition to being affiliated with the school, the church was also involved with several foreign missions. 1892 was the start of the India Mission trips with Delia Fistler and Esther Baird. Poor health brought Delia Fistler home and on August 6th, 1916, she died. On December 17,1896, the Monthly Meeting agreed to change the name to First Friends Church, and in January of 1897 they had the first meeting with the new name. In 1902, Arthur Chilson, Willis Hotchkiss, and J. Walter Malone were sent to Africa for the Friends Africa Industrial Mission. In 1908-1917 Walter and Emma Malone were on the Pastoral Committee. In June of 1917, Malone left the position because of poor health. Everett L. Cattell, who would later become the superintendent of the Friends India missions, General Superintendent of the Evangelical Friend Church--Eastern Region, and finally President of Malone College, became the pastor of the Friends Church in 1931. In 1910, the Friends Church started to let music into their services. In 1936 Everett Cattell with his wife and two children went to India with Esther E. Baird. In 1964, they moved from East Cleveland to Willoughby Hills, and became Willoughby Hills Friends Church.
